Hundreds of villagers led by Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV), APCLC, CPI, CPI (M) and its affiliated unions stalled the public hearing programme organised by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) and the V.S.F. Thermal Power Plant at Ankulapaturu village in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district on Monday.

Several protestors, including Gudur CI Rambabu, JVV district leader Dr. Vijay Kumar and others suffered injuries in the melee and the police lathi charge in the public hearing.

Following the complaints, the police registered cases against the power plant officials, protestors and the police and took two persons into custody. The public hearing ended inconclusively and Gudur MLA Balli Durga Prasad Rao, Joint Collector Saurabh Gaur, Sub-Collector Veera Pandiyan and PCB officials who attended the programme left the place following tension in the village.

V.S.F.Thermal Power Plant is a 350 mega watt project and the management is proposing to install the project in 1, 200 acres near Ankulapaturu village of Chillakur mandal in Gudur division in the district.

Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) district secretary Ellanki Venkateswarlu said the locals in Ankulapaturu and the neighbouring villages were opposing the set up of the thermal power project as the villagers were suffering with the existing projects which are creating health hazards by violating the PCB rules.

Soon after the organisers started the public hearing for land acquisition for the power project, the protesters led by AITUC leader Rajesh, Paryavarana Parirakshana Vedika activist Raja Reddy and Kula Vivaksha Porata Samithi leader Balaiah raised slogans demanding a halt to the programme as the government sanctioned 28 power project on the sea coast, which are very high in number in the district.

They raised slogans asking the organisers to give permission to them to express their opinion and tried to climb the dais. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mobs when some protestors snatched the mikes and disrupted the programme.

The villagers allege that the project management arranged goondas to prevent entry of locals for the public hearing and the police too colluded with the private goondas and caned the villagers. Police took two protestors – Rajesh and Nagendra – into custody, said Gudur ASP K.Narayana Reddy.

In the evening, activists of APCLC, JVV, CPI, CPI (M), AITUC, AIYF, Lawyers Union and other organisations staged a rasta roko at Atmakur Bus Station protesting the police action and demanded the government not to give sanction for the power project in the district.
